What makes us want to take a picture, to press the button, touch the screen, and capture in a moment what we see before us? Are we simply creating a record of a scene at a point in time by taking a picture of something or someone, or are we trying to capture something else besides the empirical reality of the image?

The Rose Group Photographers came together through the recognition that learning is a lifelong journey and we all benefit by sharing passions, learning from each other and working together as teams. All experienced amateur photographers, we met through the Open University & Royal Photographic Society, supporting each other through considered critique, from which, whilst not sharing a vision, we gained respect for each other’s art and craft.

As five photographers, we all ‘see’ in different ways, and capture and create images for different reasons. What is common is the drive that makes us want to make those images and to press the button at a particular moment, and in doing so, not just capturing an image ‘of’ something, but producing a picture that goes beyond what is seen and is ‘about’ something.

We are pleased to announce our first exhibition, “5 Ways of Seeing”, which will be taking place at the Oxmarket Gallery, Chichester from Tuesday 24th August – Sunday 5th September. Private viewing Monday 23rd August.

Some words from the Open University

“There’s something rather special about learning that lives on after the class has ended. At the OU we have been pioneers of lifelong (and long-life!) learning for 50 years. Lifelong social learning is something of a Holy Grail and the passion and enthusiasm of the TG089 Rose group demonstrates this in buckets. We are so proud of you and all of our 25,000 TG089 students, many of whom who have continued to meet up socially around the country and develop their photography – just like the Rose Group. Your exhibition takes things to a new level. Well done!”  Best wishes, Stephen
